Although Dr. Wilson utilized a biopsychosocial model in her research and educational approaches as early as 1987, a paradigm shift occurred in her work in 1999 with a rise in spiritual consciousness  that embraced eastern, ancient and shamanic spiritual/healing  approaches.  She viewed this shift as a desire to create not only an invaluable bridge between East and West but to appreciate the healing practices of indigenous cultures throughout the world, which she observed in her travels to the Philippines, the Mariana and Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Russia, Estonia, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Thailand, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and throughout the world.
